Design engineers are regularly faced with the task of determining the appropriate drive technology for the realization of linear movements. High infeed accuracies and oscillating movements with high frequencies often have to be mastered with very small strokes or high dynamics in continuous operation. The focus is on safety and reliability. Small installation space with high loads is often a challenge. Maintenance and service life and, last but not least, costs also play an important role. The demands placed on mechanical drive elements and the requirements in the respective fields of application are increasing in equal measure.  

Ball screw and lead screw drives are among the most frequently used drive systems in many industries. The advantages of these drive systems lie in their high efficiency and energy efficiency. Eichenberger's screw technology, thread rolling (cold forming of the lateral surface of round parts), combines maximum load capacity and force density with enormous dynamics and precision at maximum running performance.

Successful cell cultivation thanks to ball screws

When cultivating cells, bacteria or viruses, tissue cultures are prepared in sterile containers, usually in an air-conditioned, germ-free room. The device is often placed on a rocker table, whose gentle tilting movement provides the necessary mixing to allow the cell cultures to grow. Our electrically driven, cold-rolled Carry ball screw drives convert the rotary motion of the small motors into a linear motion. The perfect movement contains perfect dynamics. Delicate ball screw drives accomplish this subtle movement quickly and with high precision in the smallest of spaces - with an almost unlimited service life.

Supporting cell cultures in the growth process

To keep the cells alive, they need a nutrient solution from time to time. Samples must also be taken periodically. In simple terms, this works as follows: A tube is used to connect the nutrient solution container to the cell culture container and the "meal" is pumped into it. However, it is not that simple - not because of the liquid transfer, but because of sterility. Even bacterial contamination would be enough to destroy a cell culture. Contamination in cell culture is often underestimated. A portable, programmable tube connector enables the fully automatic and rapid connection of thermoplastic tubes by means of a sterile welding process. It is the Carry ZYI ball screw drives that fulfill all the requirements to help this exceptional welding device achieve absolutely reliable top efficiency and highly precise movements. 

First, a Carry screw drive, 10 x 2 mm, length 75 mm, separates the cables with a vertical cut, leaving the heated disposable blade at the bottom. Now the other Carry screw drive, 10 x 2 mm, length 69 mm, pushes the two dies horizontally along the hot knife. Carry moves the guides against each other so precisely that the hose ends are in exactly the right position. As soon as the hoses are aligned, the blade moves up out of the hoses. The two lines are then pressed together and a tight weld is completed. The nutrient solution can now be pumped in. 

A tolerance of one hundredth of a millimeter must guarantee a consistent process over a long period of time for the vertical path of the blade and the horizontal displacement of the hoses. The Carry ZYI ball screw drive is able to master this challenge. In terms of cleanliness, this type of sterile hose connection is comparable to the process in a clean room.
