Drive component for patio roofing

When a tailor-made louvre roofing and louvre wall system is required for a completely individualized exterior domicile in an extremely short time, it becomes particularly challenging. The Speedy lead screw drive, manufactured using the cold rolling process and dimensioned according to customer requirements, now manages the precise change in position of these slat elements. Eichenberger succeeded in implementing a spindle pitch ratio of 14 mm diameter with a pitch of 40 mm for this sun protection system in accordance with the specifications. The exceptional pitch ratio of 14/40 results in a great traversing speed. This allows the spindle to rotate extremely slowly. This in turn has a positive effect on the vibration behavior of the entire construction. Threaded spindles with a length of six meters are required for the accurate movement of the sheet metal slats. The main challenge was to achieve concentricity and straightness of the corrosion-resistant threaded rods with these lengths. The customer-specific injection-moulded nuts were another sticking point. A specially adapted tool also had to be manufactured in-house to produce the inner workings of the plastic nuts supplied by the customer. There are 25 nuts per six meters of threaded rod. They move the slats smoothly, robustly and barely audibly.

A high-precision ball screw drive of the Carry type regulates the fanning of the ropes of towed sonars and thus prevents them from tangling. This is installed in a special cardan connection that compensates for or prevents vibrations, inclined positions or tilting. For this project, Eichenberger once again pushed the boundaries and ventured into new profile shapes and dimensions. On the one hand, the limited space around the ball screw spindle posed a challenge in this application; on the other hand, the nut had to set the cardan drive in motion. It was necessary to find a customer-specific solution that met the high functional and economic requirements. In collaboration with the customer, Eichenberger Gewinde AG therefore further developed the Carry ball screw drive. The heavy-duty, tailor-made special nut can now be used to actuate the cardan drive. These highly resilient functional components offer a significant price and space advantage.

Keeping material conveyors on track  

Just how difficult it is to roll things up properly becomes clear when you drop a roll of kitchen paper or aluminum foil. This is the crux of the matter with controlled web guiding systems. In an effort to achieve dynamic equilibrium, a belt generally tends to align itself at right angles to the guide roller. Various factors such as strength. Tension distribution and mass inertia come into play. Different rotating frame systems offer the possibility of precise corrections by guiding the web at an offset angle as it passes through the control section. A spindle is controlled directly via a motor, a gearbox and belt drives. This allows rotary movements to be converted into linear movements. In the case of web guiding systems, the ball screw drive sets the corrective movement of the sensor-controlled actuator in motion. Accordingly, thrust, speed, stroke and precision are integrated in a single product. The optimization of the material web position can be perfectly controlled using rotating frame or other systems. Around ten different and perfectly adapted ball screw types are used in various systems. The cold-rolled screw drives ensure accurate movement in sometimes extremely confined spaces. 

Solving practical and increasingly demanding tasks proves to be a challenge for some designs. This is why development in mechanics is never finished. Modern drive technology in particular is perceived differently these days. Where mechanical parts used to be visible, today concealed drives are desired. They should do their job - preferably completely invisibly and silently - in the smallest of spaces. And for a lifetime.  

Use of ball screws in circuit-breakers

Circuit-breakers are crucial for the safe operation of the power grid. For example, they have to switch the entire output of a power plant on and off and control voltages of up to 1500 kV. Cold-rolled ball screws play an extremely important and responsible key role here. 

A high-voltage short circuit reaches its maximum value after just five milliseconds. Fortunately, an interruption of the power supply in the event of a short circuit is rarely required. However, if this occurs unexpectedly, the absolute reliability of the mechanical drive elements is essential. The ball screw drive type Carry guarantees maximum functional reliability with enormous performance (efficiency >0.9) and robustness. Carry prepares the mechanical closing and opening process of the circuit-breaker with the aid of coil springs. Two solid push rods are firmly connected on both sides to the custom-made nut, also known as the carrier. These two levers set the huge, spring-loaded striking armatures in motion, which separate the metal contact extremely quickly. Despite the most adverse weather conditions and extreme temperature differences, the maintenance-free carry performs its task with absolute reliability. The customer-specific requirements for the ball screw drive with integrated customer interface in the nut are extensive and varied. It meets the highest demands in terms of axial force and geometry. Tribological aspects such as friction, wear and lubrication were included as basic requirements in this application. The tricky task of adapting the exterior of the nut body to the special interface requirements and the kinematic conditions proved to be particularly challenging. The different requirements for worldwide use led to the development of various dimensions of the Carry ball screw drive, consisting of the cold-rolled threaded spindle and the specific drive nut.
