We want to be able to live and use comfortably in any weather, so that the individual patio can be opened up into a living space in a matter of seconds. 6 meter long Speedy threaded rods, each with 25 nuts running on it, enable a quick and elegant switch from terrace to living space. They are integrated into a sophisticated slat system. The screw drives silently regulate the precise change in position of the slat elements.

The fact that close teamwork takes place at Eichenberger and that development, production and quality assurance come from a single source increases flexibility in terms of prototype production. The rolling tools are manufactured "in house", which means that new prototypes can be realized within a very short time. Thanks to these factors, production can be flexible and competitive even at an expensive location.
The drive components for the patio roofing had to be developed and produced virtually on the fly. The Speedy lead screw drive, manufactured using the cold rolling process and dimensioned according to customer requirements, now manages the precise positional adjustment of these slat elements. In accordance with the specifications, Eichenberger succeeded in implementing a spindle pitch relation with a diameter of 14 mm and a pitch of 40 mm for this sun protection system. As the name suggests, speed plays the main role with Speedy. The exceptional pitch ratio of 14/40 results in a great traversing speed. This allows the spindle to rotate extremely slowly. This in turn has a very positive effect on the vibration behavior of the entire construction. Threaded spindles with a length of 6 meters are required for the accurate movement of the sheet metal slats. The main challenge was to achieve concentricity and straightness of the corrosion-resistant threaded rods with these lengths. The next sticking point was the customer-specific injection-moulded nuts. A specially adapted tool also had to be manufactured in-house to produce the inner workings of the plastic nuts supplied by the customer. There are 25 nuts per 6 meter threaded rod. They move the slats smoothly, robustly and barely audibly.
Advantages of cold forming
What sounds so simple is only possible with a wealth of experience, a high level of quality awareness and modern machinery. A thread is produced by deforming a workpiece under enormous force between two rotating rolling tools. The usual manufacturing processes for threads, such as milling, turning or whirling, are machining processes. These have the disadvantage that they interrupt the grain flow of the raw material. Thread rolling, on the other hand, is a non-cutting process that does not cut the longitudinal fibers of the steel, but merely diverts them. Depending on the material, this results in an increase in strength of 30 to 50 %. At the same time, the surface in the profile hardens and offers fewer opportunities for contamination. Thread rolling also results in very good roughness values (< Rz 1.0) on the thread flanks and in the base radius, resulting in significantly reduced notch sensitivity. A "smoothly rolled", compressed surface is the result, which is essential for a long service life of the spindle and especially for the nut. This and the optimum combination of spindle, nut and lubrication result in a remarkably high efficiency of η 0.8. The designer thus has the option of using a motor that can be reduced in terms of power and space consumption. The implementation of the 40 mm pitch ensures a very dynamic change in position. To achieve such a high speed, a single-start standard trapezoidal spindle with Ø 14 mm would have to rotate over 13 times faster, which would be completely impossible with a spindle length of 6 m - in terms of critical speed. In addition to the good stability, wear and noise generation are favorably influenced by the smooth Speedy rotary motion.
Depending on the weather conditions, the loads change and functionality must be guaranteed just as perfectly in winter, when temperatures are below zero, as in summer, when it is hot. The robust and corrosion-resistant Speedy masters these situations. The excellent sliding properties with a coefficient of friction of less than 0.1 ensure minimal abrasion and quiet running. With the Speedy spindle, the nut body pushes the impurities in front of it like a dirt scraper, allowing only minimal contamination.
